How Horniness Affects Confidence: The Fear Stays Exactly Where It Was

There was a day when you left the house keyed up and did something you would normally talk yourself out of. You spoke first. You held the eye contact a beat longer than usual. Nothing had changed since the week before except the state you were carrying, and it had lent you a nerve you do not have.

So you went looking for how horniness affects confidence: was that real and arrangeable again on a Thursday, or did you get lucky and congratulate yourself?

The pages you found hand the question back. Stress lowers desire, low desire dents your confidence, confidence lifts desire, and round the circle goes with no mechanism inside it. Some results tell you to lift weights. One is a clinic page on erectile difficulty undermining nerve and desire together, a true and narrow slice of your question. Much of the rest is “sexy confidence” material written for women.

None of it answers the question underneath: why the state that made one night easy makes the next a disaster.

I have six years of dated journals on this and I have searched them for both words. They give an answer I did not want. The state is real and what it supplies is force. It leaves the fear at full strength and your opinion of yourself untouched, and my worst recorded day landed the morning after my best fortnight.

A tow chain pulled bar-taut to a truck whose tire is still buried in the same mud, force added and nothing about the stuck wheel changed, which is how horniness affects confidence.

Six Years of Logs on How Horniness Affects Confidence

“Horny” is my own live word, turning up 31 times across my journals, mostly 2020 to 2022, written mid-week in the present tense. “Confidence” turns up about 30 times, and the two almost never do the same job.

Confidence, in my writing, arrives after an approach that went acceptably. “Positive experience breeds confidence and that comes with committing,” I wrote in late 2019, and that is the shape of nearly every hit. It is an outcome, and it lags the action.

The state gets credited with changing what I did, and the word I reach for is always a word for force. Risk. Push. Vulnerable. From 20 April 2020:

Also, it was great to see how important sexuality was. When I’m horny I take more risks […]

In six years no entry describes the state as calm, or ease, or certainty. I was writing for myself, with no reason to dress it up in either direction, and that absence is the first thing I would want if I were you.

The Best Fortnight I Had, and the Morning After It

February 2020 was the best run in my record, daily entries reading “very positive day” and “really proud of myself.” I had been raising the difficulty of what I attempted, and it had been working. On the 12th:

Things are good right now and the reason things are going well is my commitment has been superb lately. Definitely increased my confidence. Good arousal as well.

There is your theory, in my own hand.

The next day I pushed to a level above the one I had tested. The first woman I approached asked whether I was following her. A third came over to tell me to stop following her or she would call security. I wrote it up that night as one of my worst days since the journey began, and she was right, as I said then: “she is right that I was following her.”

I tried to take a step up which was too much and as a result my energy was awkward and a mess. I tried to “lift a weight” that was too big for me right now.

That diagnosis is mine, written within the hour, and nobody has checked it. It could have been an ordinary bad day. What I can show you is that I believed the high was part of the cause.

If the state were confidence, the next day’s repair would have been more of it:

I spent some time reflecting and reminding myself how awesome I have been and how much progress I have made and how I have done some scary shit in the past year that very few people have the guts to do. Got my self-worth up doing this and my mental state improved a bit.

“Improved a bit.” I went out the same day and recorded that I was still in my head. But look at the repair: memory, an inventory of things already done, a man talking himself up on a flat battery. Nothing in it was sexual.

Does Being Horny Make You More Confident? What My Book Says Is Moving

Does being horny make you more confident? My book covers both February days at once, and it never uses the word confidence, because it is a book about machinery.

Sexual tension, in my model, is what you carry when the wanting has run ahead of what your body has been given, and it behaves like pressure in a sealed pot. The chapter introducing it uses a child in a toy store, told that today is for browsing: “Tension drives action, so even though your parents told you that today is just for browsing, you can’t help but plead with them.” Tension makes you do something, and says nothing about whether the child is right or ready.

A second piece covers what stored tension does between sessions. While you carry it, my account goes, the wanting lies dormant until something sets it off, and then surges higher than usual because the reservoir was full. It makes you reactive to a spark and never steadier, and it arrives late and steep.

One piece has been tested on other people. In 2006 Dan Ariely and George Loewenstein ran an experiment on 35 male college students who answered the same questions twice, once neutral and once aroused, alone at home. Aroused, they rated a wider range of things appealing and said they would go further to get sex, into territory they had ruled out when cold.

What that study did not do is watch anybody in a real situation. Every answer was hypothetical, the arousal was self-induced with no live trigger, and 35 students at one university is a small sample. Carrying it across to a man in a shop is my extension. So the state is fuel, and spending it on an action you chose is a real technique I use. The failure mode is letting it choose the action.

A branching diagram showing how horniness affects confidence: sexual tension forks into an action you chose or the state choosing for you, each with its real outcome from the journal.

The Tell That the State Has Started Choosing

Three years later I was working out a run of rejections. On 15 January 2023:

My current theory is that arousal is making me vulnerable and this reduces self-worth.

In the same entry I named two behaviours. The first was over-talking: “I always try to keep convo going because I like her so much and want it to work out in the moment.” The second was a sentence of mine from that weekend, “can I sit down, or are you busy,” whose second half concedes the answer before the first half finishes asking.

Both are the same move. Wanting it that badly had turned my attention inward, onto how I was coming across, and it leaked into the words.

The nearest researched account is the Clark and Wells model of social anxiety, in which self-focused attention during a social encounter goes with worse social performance, as the person rates it and as observers do. That evidence is mostly correlational, and the model was built on people with social anxiety disorder, never on ordinary men in a keyed-up state, so the carry-over is mine and untested. Covering the state with composure has its own price, written about separately.

If what undermines you is standing and general, there on quiet days as much as loud ones, that belongs with a doctor or a therapist and nothing here will touch it.

The Question I Have Not Answered

I found all this once before and lost it. In December 2021, thirteen months earlier:

the arousal work I have done is amazing, but it promotes vulnerability – showing a girl how much you desire her. But it kills self-worth. And as I know from my last journey before covid: vulnerability without self-worth does not get you laid

Four days later I put the question directly:

My arousal work has made me very vulnerable to women. But has not been good for self-worth. How do I use arousal to build self-worth? Is it holding back when I am super horny? Is it regaining composure and seeing her as a person not a glorious perfect entity? Is it the feeling that I can slow things down? I am not sure yet.

I am still not sure. I can tell you what the record shows the state doing and failing to do, and I cannot tell you how to make it build the other thing. One line from that week has held up: on a low-arousal day I could still work on composure, and I wrote that “I don’t need arousal for that.” The two run on separate tracks, and the slower keeps its own schedule.

Self-Worth While Aroused

The countermeasure is one line, written to myself on 22 September 2022 and again three days later, which is how I know it was failing to hold:

Self-worth while aroused – even though in that moment she seems godly, I will dump her if I am not happy.

Read past the phrasing. I set a standard while calm, in writing, knowing I would be in no position to set one later. This is the version for you.

  1. Pick the moment, and make it a dull one. A weekday morning, or the day after a session. Anything you settle on the way out of the door with the state already built has been settled by the state.
  2. Name the one action you are testing tonight. The approach itself, or holding a conversation past the opener, whichever is honestly your current level. Name something you do. Never an outcome, and never anything she does.
  3. Write one line you will not override. Mine was a sentence about walking away. Yours might be that you will keep quiet after a clear no, or that you will stay at the level you have already tested, or that you will treat your own urgency as a feeling and never as information about what she wants. One line, in writing, somewhere you can find it.
  4. Out in the world, give the state one job. It is there to push you through the fear on the action you already named, and that is the whole of its brief.
  5. Watch for it applying for a second job. The tells are the ones from my 2023 entry: talking to keep the thing alive, softening a question into its own refusal, a pull toward a level you had not planned on. When one shows up, go back to the written line. The pull is your cue to use it, and never a reason to trust the moment further.
  6. Grade the night against the line you wrote. Leave her answer out of it. If the night went badly, repair it the way my own record shows repair working: sit down the next day and list what you have already done. Waiting for the next high to paper over it is the move that failed me.

What it feels like. The fear stays where it was, the whole way through. My phrase for the physical part is “that punch in the stomach,” low in the gut, sitting alongside the fear and never in place of it. In December 2024 I wrote that without it I would not approach a woman I found perfect, because I was scared.

How long it takes. I never measured a duration, and nothing I have read measures one. What I can give you is the build-up window, and my book’s guideline is ordinary: if you usually finish every two days, wait an extra day or two.

How to tell it apart. If the fear has gone and what you feel is ease, you have most likely done this particular thing often enough for it to be ordinary. That state is worth having and this page has nothing to do with it.

What it means if nothing happens. The likeliest answer is that the fuel was never there. My clearest record is the day I ejaculated by accident and lost the next two days: with the state gone, I knew I would approach nobody, however much I wanted to. Deciding to be confident has never substituted for it.

Check it tomorrow on one question. Did you keep the line you wrote? Yes or no, and it has nothing to do with how the night went.

The free email series works a level below this page: where the fuel comes from, what your body tries to do with it the moment it arrives, and why the distance between those two is what you have been feeling as nerve.

There is nothing in my book about confidence, self-worth, or how to carry yourself in front of someone. All of that sits in my journals, and this page is most of what I have.

The book is the other half, the machinery, and it takes up what this page leaves to chance: the level you walk out of the house carrying. It has an exercise for finding the number of days that suits you, where too few leave you flat and too many take the edge off, and a method for building tension in one sitting by working the pelvic floor as a valve, opened a fraction at a time.
